"Aw, that's a nice kit you got, Shadowboar," Fangspider commented, looking fond. The other warrior smiled warmly down upon Shadowkit, and nodded in agreement.
"He is beautiful, isn't he?"
Shadowkit looked skittishly from one black tom to the other, feeling slightly intimidated, especially by Fangspider, whose tall frame cast a large shadow over half the nursery. He felt a large head nudge his backside, and he was pushed forward towards the two of them with a surprised squeak. Glaring back, he saw his mother Darkshimmer wink at him, and he scowled playfully.
"H-hi," he husked nervously.
"Hey there fella," Fangspider replied playfully, crouching down to meet him at eye level. Shadowkit felt a bit overwhelmed as he stared back into those large yellow-green eyes-- same as his-- and when Fangspider smiled, he revealed long, white teeth and Shadowkit stumbled back a little. Oh, that was scary!
"Don't scare him, brother," Shadowboar scolded lightly, flicking the laughing cat on the shoulder, and moved forward to take his place. "Hey Shadowkit," he proceeded to greet gently, "I'm your father, Shadowboar."
Shadowkit suddenly found his voice, excited at the prospect of finally meeting his dad. "My name is Shadow, too!"
"That's right-- you were named after me," his father purred, a hint of pride in his voice. "You ready to be a warrior?"
"A warrior?"
"A fearsome fighter who serves ThistleClan," Fangspider spoke up from behind Shadowboar, in a faux deep voice, his head poking out to smile at Shadowkit. Shadowkit felt slightly less scared of his uncle-- the long teeth were fearsome, but he'd gotten the idea that Fangspider wasn't going to bite him anytime soon. Plus, he was nice. "Warriors aren't afraid of anything!"
"Wow!" Shadowkit's eyes widened in excitement. A warrior? That sounded great! "Are you two warriors?"
"Yeah we are," Fangspider jumped in before Shadowboar could speak. His father merely looked amused, and stepped aside to allow his younger brother take over. "And one day you will, too. At six moons you'll become an apprentice, where you'll get a mentor to teach you great things. When the time comes, you pass a test and receive your special warrior name!"
"My own warrior name?" Shadowkit exclaimed. This was sounding better and better by the second. "Like yours? Fangspider and Shadowboar and Darkshimmer?"
"That's right," Darkshimmer said gently from behind him, "your very own name. It symbolize who you've become. One day, though. But not in a long time. Now, you have to wait six moons."
"Aw, but I don't wanna!"
"You're gonna hafta," Fangspider responded playfully, and Darkshimmer shook her head in amusement at his antics. "If you begin training too intensely too young you might get hurt. Don't want to get hurt, right?"
"No!"
"Right, then. You'll stay in the camp like a good kit," Shadowboar said, with a glint in his eye. Shadowkit nodded feverishly. No, he wouldn't get hurt! He would wait like a good kit until he became an apprentice-- whatever that meant-- and train hard to become a warrior.
"You done playing games with the kit yet?" a new voice grunted, and Shadowkit watched as a black-and-brown tom with yellow-green eyes like his sidle up to his father and uncle. "Because Kitestar wants us to go on patrol soon. Visiting hour is over now."
"Calm your fur," Fangspider said in that same playful tone, patting the disgruntled-looking tom on the shoulder. Shadowkit tilted his head at the newcomer. Who was he? He looked exactly like Fangspider and Shadowboar.
"Who's that?" he couldn't help but ask. The three toms turned towards him, and the new warrior's eyes surveyed him intensely. Shadowkit cowered slightly, and Darkshimmer patted him on the shoulder.
"For StarClan's sake, you're scaring him, Thunderhound."
Thunderhound?
"Thunderhound is your other uncle," Shadowboar clarified. "On your mother's side. He's Darkshimmer's brother."
"Oh."
"Well, we must be going, it looks like," Fangspider sighed, beginning to turn away. "Good-bye, young Shadowkit. We'll see each other around camp! Be good, now. Wonder when I'll have my own kit," he said, addressing Shadowboar, as he bent down to lick Shadowkit on the head in his own form of good-bye. Thunderhound watched on silently, his yellow-green eyes piercing Shadowkit with the same intensity as before. The three turned away, and Shadowkit watched them leave.
"What do you think of your family?" Darkshimmer asked quietly from behind.
"I like 'em! But I don't think Thunderhound likes me."
"He's a quiet cat." Darkshimmer chuckled. "I'm sure he'll warm up to you once you get to know him better. Don't worry, he's not mean. But he's a very great warrior who is highly respected, so he'll probably be tired-- respect his space and don't bother him too much, okay?"
"Okay. Maybe if I become a good warrior Thunderhound will like me!"
"That sounds like a good plan. Let's go meet our other family members. My mother Ravenfeather has been dying to meet you. She's an elder now, and I'm sure she'll have wonderful stories to tell you if you ask politely."
"Really?"
"Really. Listen carefully-- all her stories have a lesson. Learning those lessons can help you become a better warrior in the future."
Shadowkit nodded solemnly. If that was the case, then he'd memorize all of Ravenfeather's tales by heart until he could recite them in his sleep. Nothing would stop him from becoming the best warrior of ThistleClan.
